AICTE says classes for engineering and tech institution will be starting from 25th October

Admission to engineering and technical courses follow an academic schedule fixed by the Supreme Court back in December 2012 that can't be changed without consent of the top court.

NEW DELHI: Engineering and technical institution need to start classes for freshers from October 25 and for existing students from October 1, as per the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) modified academic schedule endorsed by the Supreme Court on Monday.

The schedule was arranged, keeping in mind about the Covid-19 pandemic and the late announcing of the Class 12 result of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and other state sheets. The outcomes are required to be declared by July 31.

The AICTE schedule was endorsed by a seat of justices L Nageswara Rao and Aniruddha Bose who said that a special change is being made to the schedule just because of the pandemic.

While dates of the entrance test by different institution are yet to be declared, AICTE has requested that all technical institutions to complete the first round of counselling by September 30, and second round by October 10. The individuals who wish to look for cancelling of seats in the first semester will get a full fee refund on the off chance that they apply before October 15. Institution will have time till October 20 to top off these vacancies.  

In independent institutions giving post-graduate diploma in management (PGDM) or certification courses in management, the last date for admission will be August 11. For open and distance learning courses or courses instructed through the online medium, admissions will close on September 10 for the 1st semester and February 1, 2022 for the 2nd semester, according to the AICTE's updated plan.

The reconsidered schedule for the current academic session 2021-22 was introduced to the top court in an application by AICTE through advocate Harish Pandey. According to this request, classes for engineering and technical courses are to begin from August 1 each year and vacancies, assuming any, are to be topped off by college/institute before August 15.

 

Last year also, this schedule couldn't be followed as admissions were postponed because of the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. The AICTE modified the schedule three times during the previous year – first in August, then in October and lastly in November. Well, the last date for commencement of classes last year was December 1 and students were permitted to look for channelisation of admission with full fee refund till November 30, 2020.

This year, the 2nd wave of Covid-19 pandemic constrained AICTE to present a revised schedule for approval to the court. Showing up for the AICTE, additional solicitor general (ASG) KM Nataraj told the summit court that technical institute had the option to start classes for 2020-21 just in January 2021 and surprisingly the second semester tests got late because of the pandemic.

For new admission, the result of the Class 12 Board exam, out by June first week, have been postponed till July 31, ASG Nataraj said. Because of lockdown in a few states, AICTE couldn't finish inspection of institutions that sought grant of approval or affiliation.

The court permitted AICTE time till July 15 to give permission to technical institution, independent PGDM institutions and different foundations offering open, distance learning and online medium courses. The last date for approving connection by any college or board to any technical institution was additionally stretched out to August 10, 2021.
